Dr.Himanshu Mehta ‘Tips’ students

The Asian Age (Mar 2003)

By Skimmy Gupta

The exam fever is on with thousands of students poring over books and burning midnight oil. Extra eye care must be taken during studying hours to avoid common eyestrain problem.Dr.Himanshu Mehta, Ophthalmologist suggests general precautions and tips for students to take care of their eyes for better concentration and good exam results.

Dr. Himanshu Mehta, ophthalmologist at Vision eye Center: a state-of-art eye care and treatment center, Juhu caters to clientele range from underprivileged society to film personalities. Speaking about students and eye care, he told The Asian Age “During exam days, eyestrain can cause several ailments like headache, migraine etc. Proper lightning is absolutely essential for students spending hours studying for exams. Headaches during continuous poring over books occur due to small error or slight impairment of eyesight. A 20-20 vision is necessary for a young student to attend to his daily duties without cumbersome spectacles or lenses. It is mandatory to get a child’s eyes checked when he becomes 4 years , as most small kids never complain about improper eyesight. Redness, burning and watering of eyes should not be taken lightly. A student must have his eyes tested by an ophthalmologist on regular basis and if required wear correct glasses”.

Dr.Mehta underwent super specialty training in ophthalmology from Houston, USA and involved in early studies of Excimer Laser. His area of focus is cataract and vireo-retina surgery and has conducted over 5000 surgeries. He is orienting people about causes and effects of blindness by diabetes through regular eye camps throughout India. As he says “Vision is our most cherished gift and neglect at early stages can often lead to cataract and even blindness at a later stage. New nutritional research shows in many cases of degenerative eye disease, nutritional intervention is effective at slowing, stopping and reversing untreatable eye diseases. As an ophthalmology surgeon, I adhere to innovative technology & cost effective treatment; sympathy & understanding and judicious use of surgery.”

“TIPS“ FOR STUDENTS

Strictly avoid reading while lying down. Read sitting in upright position.
Avoid reading in light falling directly from front or back. It must fall from the side.
Interperse continuous studies with outdoor games like table tennis to reduce eyestrain.
Eat a balanced diet with fruits and green vegetables
Have a proper balanced sleep with sufficient number of hours.
Many children are scared of falling sleep during exams because of parents’ pressure; This situation should be handled by building child’s confidence

By Skimmy Gupta

Smoking in a restaurant or a public place? Get ready to face the music of FDA authorities and shell out two hundred rupees. FDA officials conducted their first major drive to implement Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003 implemented from 1st May 2004 across the city. The daylong drive conducted by 28 food inspectors on restaurants/hotels and shops on Saturday, 19th June yielded a total fine collection of Rs.20, 200/-.72 hotels/restaurants/bars in Mumbai were penalized for violating FDA norms of not putting ‘No-Smoking’ board at their premises and resulted in collection of Rs.14, 400/-. Even restaurants with at least 30 seats had not demarcated ‘No smoking zone’ as per the Act. Few persons were also fined for smoking in public. 68 restaurants in Thane were also penalized in a similar drive conducted on Friday.

FDA officials inform that many restaurants had not even heard of such law implemented by state FDA. The Act prevents smoking in public places like auditorium, hospitals, restaurants, amusement parks, bus depots, trains, public offices, public conveyance and any place to which public have access whether of right or not. FDA officials across Thane and Mumbai plan to conduct such regular drives to make restaurateurs and public aware about the Act.

MEN IN RED

The Asian Age (Dec 2003)

By Skimmy Gupta

Actor Saif Ali Khan sporting a bright red tie to woo actress Preity Zinta on a date in hit movie ‘ Kal Ho Na Ho’ is hardly surprising. Red colour is rapidly swapping men’s life in all shapes and sizes in form of red shirts, red shoes, red cars, red briefcase, red jackets … Different men have varied connotation of red colour. City men love to be associated with red as they feel it evokes desire, passion and makes them feel sexy, hot and fiery. In abroad, the red colour is often related with sense of power; but red in Mumbai is more of a fashion statement. Previously related to a gaudy dressing sense by low-strata men; accessories of red colour are now prized possession of the rich and famous.

Fashion Designer Rocky S feels men have become fashion conscious trying new trends in colours. He says,” At recent Lakme’s fashion week, my entire collection in red and pink for men was sold out. The media and fashion all over world is also promoting red shades in a big way. And India is following the same. Now, red is the prime colour men sport on outings and parties or while going to discos. I myself have liking for red. I own deep red shoes, red wristbands and some red shirts.”

Actor Joy Sen Gupta has acted in theatre, art movies and teleserials like ‘Kuch Pal Saath Tumhara’ believes red is colour of earth, passion and energy.”Whenever I go shopping, red things attract me first. I like apples too. T-shirts, pullovers, shirts, paintings in this colour and shoes with red spot form my collection. I love watching Manchester United play football in their famous red shirts.” says Joy Sen Gupta.

Neimesh Sanghvi, 26, MD, ’Level 3’ – company offering event support services located at Juhu says, “Few years back, I started loving red colour. I possess red shirts and am soon buying a pair of red shoes. Being a contemporary kind of guy, I even coloured my hair red few months ago. My family is quite supportive of me to be associated with this colour. Red gives me immense confidence apart from making me feel romantic and goody”

Nitin Dhadda, a 25-year-old production incharge manager, K.G.K Enterprises-a jewellery-manufacturing firm at Opera House is proud of his red briefcase. He believes red forms an important part in all walks of life: from red sacred thread on wrists to red ‘kumkum’. He says, “ I have a red pen, red shirts and many things in red. I am completely fascinated by this colour.”

The craze of red amongst men is also engulfing departmental stores who are stocking accessories of this colour. Sanjeev B., Custom facilitator, Wills Lifestyle store at Khar says, “The colour of the season is red and pink. We have got huge collection for men in this colour range. There is a certain transition in men to think red and expect red on shopping. The clientele mainly includes young executives and youth.”

Studio M –Footwear store at Bandra regularly stocks red shoes for men in formals, sports shoes, sandals. W.Hussain, sales manager says, “Men seem to be bit bored with black and brown shoes. We had wide range of Liberty red shoes and the response has been good. Some customers come and specifically ask for red shoes.”

Anjali Chabbria, consulting psychiatrist feels, “ The whole generation of today is very much conscious of looking good and different. They are trying hard to get noticed. Wearing reds and pinks in men is not just a trend; but also a reason to express them in whatever they do or desire. These days there is no exclusive domain of men and women. Each one is doing what the other does. No doubt, it is a healthy trend. On the contrary, if a person only wants to get noticed wearing such colours only and exploring metro sexuality-it is dangerous for one’s personality.”

The Asian Age(Mar 2003)

By Skimmy Gupta

While millions of cricket fans watched Indian team thrash Sri Lanka on Monday and qualify for World Cup semi finals, about 600-700 prisoners and under trials at Thane Central Jail are constantly encouraging the Indian team throughout the World Cup. There are about six TV sets installed in jail barracks wherein each barrack has capacity of 100-140 prisoners at Thane Central Jail-one of the biggest central jails of Maharashtra. Seated together in large groups, they watch India’s every match -clapping at Indian boundary hit and dancing at fall of rival team’s wicket. The atmosphere during India’s match is truly electric with some even placing friendly bets to evoke more interest in match viewing.

Vinayak Devle, Senior Jailor, Thane Central Jail, Thane told The Asian Age,“Although our TV sets have access to only Doordarshan wherein India’s matches and important matches are telecast, but the craze is high. On eve of Indo-Pak match, there was tremendous excitement amongst the prisoners, as they bucked the Indian team at each moment displaying true patriotism. I feel cricket matches and sports are morale boosters for citizens especially these criminals. For India’s day-night matches, we also extended the regular 10 pm deadline with the condition proper law and order maintainence. “

Another senior official on condition of anonymity said, “Few prisoners also place friendly bets of cold drink, sweets with each other in a jovial mood, most common ones being ‘Aaj Sachin sau marega’ ‘Kaif teen catch pakdega’ ‘Yuvraj sixes kitne marega’ etc. The common bet of India winning the match is less, as all are confident of India winning even the final match. But we ensure no money bets are placed in the jail, as it is illegal. India’s semi-final match next week is now the favorite topic of discussion amongst the prisoners in the jail premises.”

Sources reveal the prisoners are thoroughly enjoying cricket matches especially Indo-Pak match played last fortnight. The prison strength comprising of about 30% Muslims and as Indo-Pak match evokes great jingoism; the jail authorities ensured no unnecessary communal disturbance surfaces. They requested prisoners to refrain from excessive slogans while watching the match. All agreed to the peacekeeping orders and everyone including prisoners, under trials, jailors and staff relished India’s thumping victory over archrivals Pakistan.

Rajendra Dhamne, Superintendent, Thane Central Jail said, “TV sets provided along with other basic facilities are keeping prisoners entertained and occupied during cricket matches. It makes them smile and jubilant and help them forget their traumatic criminal past. We want them to also enjoy memorable cricketing moments like billions of Indians across the globe.”

By Skimmy Gupta

The crowded streets of Mumbai city with blaring horns, frequent bottlenecks and fast paced life often evokes stress amongst Mumbaites.Executives of the city mainly blame the congested traffic to be one of the main factors leading to stress and often lead them into a state of depression. Other factors contributing to stress includes competition at work and striving to attain a high position at job in a short time. But all said and done, the real fact remains the lives of Mumbaites are experiencing various types of stress, depression, frustrations and different kinds of mental pressures in theri day to day life .

Skimmy Gupta spoke to Mumbaites of different fraternities and found that all are in the same boat of loads of stress. They are desperate and seeking measures to rejuvenate their lifestyle and lead a stress free quality life.

Dr. Vidyadhar Oke, President - Medical at Nicholas Piramal India Ltd - a pharmaceutical company at Parel feels the prevalent extended working hours at job are one of main factor of stress for executives. He says “At an average, a Mumbaite commutes 2-3 hours on a daily basis to and fro to job. Almost half the day, he is out of the house and is obviously completely stressed on reaching his home. Also the growing uncertainty of a job in highly competitive world adds to the stress.”

Payal Rohatgi, actress and Femina Miss India 2000 Finalist will be seen in ‘Tumse milkar’,’Rakt’ and other forthcoming Bollywood movies says “For me, competition in glamour industry is a stress factor as I do not hail from a filmy background. Everyday is a challenge for me, as I have to improve to excel in this field. And traffic jams add to the stress. And I try to beat it by chilling out with friends, meditation and trust in God.”

HOW TO BEAT STRESS

Good citizens must follow civic duties. A clean and lawful city induces less stress.
One must manage time in an effective and efficient way
Take some time for yourself in a day to chill out.
Adopt a disciplined eating and sleeping habits.
Cultivate a hobby like reading, listening to music, painting etc
Have a positive attitude.
Meditation and Yoga
Exercise for atleast 30 mts everyday.
Spend time with family and friends.

Arun Aggarwal, M.D, Packaging Remedies at Goregaon opines, “The basic stress affecting young Mumbaites is drinking alcohol and night life. Drinking is root cause of all problems like road rage, frustration, depression etc. In our fraternity, delayed payments in my business add to many problems and sometimes lead to stress. But I remain calm, quiet, listening to music and spending time with family. Reading is the best stress buster.”

Capt. Diwakar Trivedi, owner ,Get Fit –a gynasium at Andheri says, ”People come to gym with work pressures. Every individual have their own stress: study tensions for collegians and traveling/traffic jams for others. Overweight people have both physical and mental stress. The best way to relieve stress is to have a daily work out of 30-35 minutes.”

Model Actor Gautam Rode feels, “ Traveling long distances on Mumbai roads is a basic stress and it should be solved by concerned authorities immediately. For a single appointment sometimes an entire day is spent. A workout is the only stress buster for me. Otherwise trafiic is killing in Mumbai.”

Dr.Shreekanth Joshi, a psychiatrist practicing at Thane since 25 years feels that in a crowded city like Mumbai external factors like noise, pollution, and traffic, excess population adds to an individual’s stress levels. He says, “Stress levels occurs due to interaction between external events and one’s mind. One can reduce stress devoting personal time to oneself on a daily routine and cultivate a hobby like reading, listening to music etc.”

GIRLS SHOULD STAY ALERT ON DATES

The Asian Age (Mar 2004)

By Skimmy Gupta

In a shocking incident of date rape, Tina, (name changed) - a 18 year old student was raped by her boyfriend Imran on Valentine’s Day at Khar.Tina was physically abused by Imran for two days and later Imran’s group of friends raped her for almost a week. Couple of weeks ago the police nabbed the four accused.

The incident has sprung strong reaction from City psychiatrist and social activists on this shocking issue of date rape. They feel that dates have largely become a part of most teenagers of the city. However they also caution that girls need to be more alert on a date to avoid being sexually exploited.

Mr.Shreekanth Joshi, psychiatrist informs that statistics reveal most rapes occur by the people known to the victim. He says, “Dates are an accepted part of most teenagers in the city. But there is always a dangerous line of decency and trust between the boy and the girl. There is bound to be sexual attraction but. girls should discourage sexual advances by their boyfriend on dates.”

Sulochana Kapil,a social activist feels that it is parent’s prerogative to know that where abouts about their children. Sulochana says, “Under the modernization, show offs and broad outlook, parents often tend to trust their children blindly. When children grow up,it becomes vital for parents to monitor them at every step. A girl’s dignity is in her own hands, being modern in mental caibre is more necessary than physical.appearence Most dates are for sexual pleasures. Thus it becomes important for a girl to be aware that she is not being physically abused under the pretext of date and magical three words ‘I love you’.”

Dr.Geeta J, a clinical psychologist counseling at psychiatry department, Savarkar Municipal General Hospital,Mulund (east) receives many cases of teenage girls who have been sexually exploited or drawn into physical relationships with their boyfriends.” The symptoms of such females are depression, bored, disinterested with life. There is a huge difference between a girl wants to express love and the way she expects her counterpart to express love. Basically in a relationship males are more body oriented. Females are rather mind oriented and they want to be cuddled and more emotionally attached in a relationship. Many times, she gives in for a physical relationship on a date just on the fear of losing the guy .”

GIRL GOING ON A DATE

Do’ s

Before going on date, accumulate maximum details about the person
Use your brain rather than heart and emotions
Dress decently. Provocative dresses induce sexual advances.
Know the person well before intimacy takes place.
Try to meet your partner in groups rather than one to one

Don’t
Do not be fooled only by smart talking, flashy appearance of the partner
Avoid meeting a new person in a secluded place
Do not let partner advance physically in first few dates
Avoid meeting at late nights, isolated cars and places
Do not drink from your partner’s glass /dish (It may contain some intoxication)

Brinda Upadhdhay, a lecturer residing at Andheri says, “Date rapes are pretty common. To avoid such cases, A girl has to be her more mental and emotional guard. There is no specific age for going on dates as long as you can handle it mentally and strongly. It is necessary for the girl to make things clear in beginning of relationship rather than become a victim later.Going on a date to movies or cafes are a good option.Closed vehicles are most dangerous and must be avoided completely.

Nirmala Samant Prabhavalkar Chairperson Maharashtra State Womens commission says,“Only 1 percent of rape case are reported in the police station. Even today our society shifts the entire blame on the victim girl rather than helping her to seek justice. Police to a certain extent do not take these cases seriously thus many enquiries are left mid –way. Rape case is a cognizable offense. The attitude of the society should also change towards the rape victim as she could live respectfully and gather courage to go forward in life.”

SUBURBAN HOTELIERS CONFUSED BY NEW LAWS

West Side Plus (Times of India -Mar 2004)

By Skimmy Gupta

Suburban Hoteliers highly upset by new laws implemented by Government have planned to protest strongly against these laws, which have affected their businesses to a great extent. Association of Hotels & Restaurants (AHAR) comprising of over 6000 hotels, pubs and restaurants in Mumbai feel the State Government is still implementing outdated laws and introducing new complicated rules without issuing proper guidelines to them.

Most hotels are still bearing the brunt due to new law of youngsters under 21 years not allowed in permit rooms, pubs. Lately, residential hotels are flummoxed by yet another rule of allotting rooms to couples with a marriage certificate. AHAR members allege that the new implemented law of inspecting marriage certificate from a couple at the time of lodging is confusing and can induce unnecessary trouble for hoteliers and customers.

Dippender Singh Sachdev, Partner- ‘Sheetal Bukhara’ restaurant at Bandra and President of AHAR says “Indifferent attitude toward genuine problems of hotel owners and harassment metted by Government may force all city hotels to shut down one day.” City permit rooms and pubs are trifle worried as latest excise circular to hoteliers inform that if anybody is found below 21 years in their premises the owner will be arrested. Dippender wonders “A 18 year old youth of Mumbai can vote and watch adult movies in theatre. But he cannot go to pub and enjoy a drink. It’s a real bemusing law.”

Romi Chadha, owner of Hotel Evergreen, Khar and AHAR member says, “Information given by customer could be false and yet the hotel owner is held responsible and arrested for immoral activities under PITA (Prevention of Immoral Trafficking) Act. Many couples indulge in kissing, fondling and other indecent behavior in autos, cabs or trains. Can police hold the driver of the vehicle as party accessory to the crime? Why impose such rules on hoteliers alone?”

MAIN ISSUES CONCERNING AHAR
Youngsters less than 21 years not allowed in permit rooms.
Residential hotels to demand marriage certificate from a couple.
No names of restaurants and bars after names of gods/goddesses.
Heavy taxes imposed by government on law-abiding hotels while food hawkers use open space freely

Another restaurateur at Bandra on condition of anonymity says, “The Government should give us a list of names of Gods and Goddesses of various castes which they do not want on our permit room board. This will not hurt anybody’s caste, creed or religion. What if the name of someone’s establishment is same as his or her family member and also clashes with name of God? ”

”We already spend lot of money and time to obtain over 40 types of licenses needed for restaurant. We have requested Government to issue a single licence as more licenses inadvertently gives rise to corrupt practices. The authorities must implement simplified laws with detailed guidelines to avoid confusion.” adds Dippender Sachdev.

Excise minister Anil Deshmukh said, “We have given specific and clear cut instructions to hoteliers. So there is no scope for confusion and they are creating unnecessary fuss. All rules applicable from 1 April and in case of violation, an enquiry will be set up. The rules were always there. But they are being strictly implemented now.”

The Asian Age (Nov 2002)

By Skimmy Gupta

“The ignorance of law is no excuse in law “ is the footnote of the anonymous circular, which residents of western suburbs of Juhu Scheme, Santacruz, Khar and Bandra are receiving everyday and there is no end to their shock. Thousands of such circulars are being distributed to residents through newspapers, handbills, post etc and all are trying to figure out the actual sender of such circulars. This one-page circular cautions the landlords, tenants, estate brokers and builders about the rampant and gross violation of BMC rules in regards to illegal construction in these suburbs. Though the sender is still a mystery, but he has created a stir in landlords/builder lobby. As it further states that these landlords/builders should not relax and enjoy big money in big illegal constructions, because they can be booked under M.R.T.P Act, which can lead to imprisonment and halt their activities forever.

In past 2-4 years, lacs of sq.ft of illegal construction worth crores of rupees have been carried out through which BMC has also incurred lose of crores of rupees by way of premium for open spaces, parking deficiency. The circular educates the residents about various commonly used modus operandi of builder/architect-BMC nexus of BMC rules open violation with regards to FSI, Parking,Open Space deficiency, fire fitting rules which are as stated :

Separate pergolas are provided on the terrace.
A special area for fire fitting etc is provided

ACTUAL CONSTRUCTION SITE

This staircase is missing and said area is converted in illegal rooms. Also instead of duplex, separate flats are sold
These rooms are illegally converted into toilets
The slab is illegally casted at normal height saving 50% FSI
They are covered with cement sheets and converted into rooms illegally
Such area is joined with flat to increase its saleable value.

Pravin J, a resident of Juhu Scheme says, “The circular is of immense help to people as many people are ignorant about rules and laws. And it cautions new flat purchasers/existing tenants to demand approved BMC plan from builder immediately and verified from architect before purchasing a flat. CIVIC COMPLAINTS GO ONLINE

The Asian Age (Mar 2003)

By Skimmy Gupta

Shantaram Shenai, local environmentalist and popularly known as Mumbai’s “Garbage Guru” along with concerned area citizens are now effectively streamlining technology and Internet to bridge the gap between citizens problems and civic department. Shantaram, heading Green Cross Society at Versova is initially setting up a computer on a street in Andheri (west) wherein people from areas of Yari road, Four Bungalows, Dhake Colony, Juhu Bus station, Lokhandwala Bridge and surrounding localities can register their civic complaints online. Also he is planning to open a mobile complaint computer system in a van to be more accessible. Bell computers at 4th Cross lane, Lokhandwala has agreed in principle with Green Cross Society to install MCGM Icon on their computer desktops leading to www.mcgm.gov.in -the official website of MCGM (Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai ). A link to the e-mail address of the K west ward office for complaints will be provided.

Shantharam Shenai brought to the fore natural ways of dealing with garbage by successfully demonstrating “earthworm technology” for recycling and sustainable ecological re-development in Andheri and western suburbs in the past. Speaking about his new venture to link technology and civic complaints he told The Asian Age “Technology has to be demonstrated to be introduced. Through Internet, this bridge of complainant and civic body can be gaped and more public support can be gathered. I have requested Bell Computers to program the server to preserve a copy of all complaints sent, so that we can monitor them. The PRAJA complaints form also can be made available at nominal charge of Rs.5/- to Rs.10/- per complaint. . Usually these complaints done by citizens on individual basis often remain in isolation and gathering hardly any public support. BELL website can also display complaints so that area people are aware of the locality happenings and can support each other”

Shenai adds” I am soon fixing a computer system in my Maruti van, so while campaigning in housing societies, it can be easily linked through a telephone line and complaints for that particular society be registered online. I am also putting a computer on the street next month where residents can file complaints regarding waste problems in. I do believe this complaint media will be popular and effective. Later, this concept can be extended to all other public departments and made multilingual too. A facility to scan the photograph of the complaint site will be made available.“

FIVE WOMEN FELICITATED ON LABOUR DAY

The Asian Age (May 2003)

By Skimmy Gupta

Women Networking Group organized a program to commemorate Labour Day on 1st May, 2003 at St.Pius College, Goregaon (E). Five women from the working class of different areas and fields were felicitated for their contribution to the Society’s Development and Growth contribution. The network chose these women to mark its respect and show its solidarity to working class women whose efforts go unnoticed.

Dr.Vibhuti Patel, member secretary, Women development cell and a reader, University of Mumbai chaired the program and presented a shawl and candle to these women. Leni from ICOR gave an introduction of the history and significance of May Day and stressed the need of the workers to unite especially in today’s world of globilisation. Members of various organizations from Akaar Mumbai, Jan Jagruti, Prayatna, Prayas Kendra, Mohalla committee Movement Trust, SRS, Prerna attended the ocassion.

The women felicitated were Regina Mary-a retrenched textile mill owner; Shushma Shetty-a worker at the artificial jewellery factory; Shanu Nair, a worker in glass factory at MIDC; Sunanda Kakde, a ragpicker from suburbs and Rashmi Kadam, a worker in factory at Jogeshwari. Each shared their experiences and the persistent problems faced by women at their workplaces.

Jaya Menon, advocate and member, Women Networking Group said,“A large section of working women still face harassment and exploitation both at work front and domestic front. At workplaces their denial of bonuses, delayed payments, no medical leaves is due to their ignorance and unawareness. At domestic, they are often beaten and assaulted and go through mental stress for not being able to carry out their responsibilities. For working class and lower strata, still harassment continues but only their forms have changed.”

Dr.Vibhuti Patel, member secretary, Women development cell and speaker for the ocassion said, “There is absolutely no awareness about Labour Day. It’s a pity that there are no journals and publications, which highlight history and importance of this day. There are museums for everything in India but there is no museum for Labour day. Even in media and TV channels, women are projected as diplomat, oversmart, hypocrites and mostly with a negative shade. Such serials portraying women in a bad light must be stopped immediately .Not even a single serial shows the struggle of the working class woman of barely able to gather two meals in a day. Today, even unions have started exploiting their members for their own vested interests. There is an immediate need to make women aware of their rights at the work front and domestic.”

The most touching experience was of Sunanda Kakde, a ragpicker from suburbs. She shared, “Since childhood, I have been a ragpicker and it been over 20 years I am hearing one day I will get a decent job. I used to spend lot of money in traveling just to get a good job in a good place and shrug off the rag picker tag. But it has not turned into a reality. I was deprived of and lived all my life in false hopes but wish my children get a respected job and education. But still if someone can teach us the recycling procedures from waste and rags, it might make a small difference to my life.”

TRIO SET TO MAKE DIFFERENCE

WEST SIDE PLUS(TIMES OF INDIA -FEB 2003)

By Skimmy Gupta

Shantaram Shenai, Nyla Masood and Y.T Vaz, residents Andheri (west) are promoting and plan to implement vermiculture in most housing societies of the area. The trio consisting of two active women members of K-West Citizen’s association (KCA) and Shantharam Shenai, environmentalist is working endlessly on their mission to make garbage-free and healthy environment. They are taking meetings, conducting workshops in the area to promote and educate people about benefits of vermiculture. Some residents have already started vermiculture out of their wet kitchen waste at their place.

Shantharam Shenai, environmentalist and Authorised Municipal trainer, heads the Green Cross Society (GCS) at Versova pumping station,Versova promotes garbage disposal system effectively as vermi-composting. He says, “GCS will help set up Vermiculture facility in the society if an aggregate of one square metre of space is made available per family. Only Canna plants would be available for viewing while organic wastes would be out of sight. The organic wastes would be treated with a mixture of rock dust, lime and vermiculture and sprayed with cowdung moisture and ensure its transformation into manure. The manure would be consumed in one’s own garden as and when ready. Rock dust, lime and vermiculture would have to be procured and maintained by your society. GCS links the Public Health programme like weekly Organic Vegetable delivery at co-operative rates and an opportunity to buy/ trade/ barter Manmade wastes from residents.”

Nyla Masood, resident of Lokhandwala told West Side Plus, “Our ambition is to make Lokhandwala a zero-garbage zone. Organics (Natural wastes) treated with lime, rock dust and vermiculture powder can be fed into plants such as CANNA & Banana. This Ecosystem through adoption of Vermiculture has to be devised in every society as it has got many advantages. The garbage will reduce by 90% volume after water loss. There will be no foul smell and absolutely no danger of any disease scientifically. Eventually, the compost/fertiliser will be utilised in your garden itself. After a few years, you can share your fertiliser with farmers through the vegetable trucks and make some money also. Also Manmade wastes can be handed over to licensed rag pickers at your gate and other wastes can be sold to raddiwalla.”

5 New Mohalla Committees

The Asian Age (May 2002)

By Skimmy Gupta

After receiving a pat on the back for doing good effective work during the past two months in maintaining communal peace in the city of Mumbai,MCMT (Mohalla Committee Movement Trust) is all set to spread its wings. As a part of expansion program,MCMT is planning to develop 5 new mohalla committees in the areas of Juhu,Dadar,Kurla,Antop Hill & Goregaon.

The ongoing Gujarat riots post Godhra massacre evoked many social organisations to avoid communal disturbances in the city. But MCMT took all the applause maintaining peace and harmony in Mumbai while Gujarat was burning. This was due to the constant efforts of the organisations’ members, facilitators taking regular peace meetings, area meetings with people of different areas. Also when the March 15 Ayodhya deadline was hanging on minds of Munmbaites, the members made it sure to ensure peace by talking to people of all communities thereby defusing rumours.

After the communal disturbances which shook Mumbai in 1992-93 ,the first requisite of MCMT was to restore confidence of people and restore peace amongst people and to open up channels of communication between police and public.

Maria Ishwaran, facilitator,MCMT said, “The former Police Commissioners Julio Rebeiro & Satish Sahney were instrumental in forming the committees. Today almost police station have a mohalla committee. But MCMT has its own representation in 25 police stations and hence the need for expansion.Especially since interacting with people on consistent basis in different parts of the city helps to narrow down the differences between them. The plan to form 5 new mohalla committees has met with positive response from people of those areas. As more and more people want to associate themselves with us as they believe in the MCMT concept.”

Speaking on recently appointed Joint Commissioner of Police (Law & Order),Javed Ahmed’s idea of new committees,Ishwaran added,”Ever since Javed Ahmed had been Additional Commissioner of Police he has been closely associated with MCMT .And now after he has become Joint Commissioner, he still extends all the support and help to our committee”

Javed Ahmed , Joint Commissioner of Police (Law & Order) told Mumbai Age, “ MCMT is doing a positive and wonderful job in reaching out to more and more people to ensure communal peace ,especially in sensitive areas of Mumbai..But there is still much more scope in other areas. They need to remain in touch with the public to restore peace and confidence of public ,as they have continuously have done over the years with the help of police and public. They are definitely doing a very good job.”

Dr.Aarif Ali Syed,Facilitator of Kurla & Sakinaka ,MCMT commented, “Kurla is a very communally senstitive area.We definitely need a mohalla committee in this area. There was a mohalla committee before but due to some reasons it could not take proper shape.Nobody can forget the Gaffur Khan Estate episode which took place in 92-93 riots. It will take time to form the committee ,as we want to choose and induct right people with neutral mindsets who will be present at right time.We will hopefully make it soon.”

CITY COUPLES STAYING AS FRIENDS

The Asian Age (Feb 2004)

By Skimmy Gupta

Sex could be everywhere in mind, but certainly not in bed…At least for some couples in Mumbai who are staying together as “friends”. From Vatsayana to Freud –many have tried to explain human sexuality. But it still remains a mystery. Infertility experts reveal many city couples living together for many years hardly indulge in sex. These couples have not even consummated their marriage due to lack of sex education. This often gives rise to infertility problems and couples are forced to approach infertility experts.

Infertility specialists feel people getting married dedicatedly fix appointments with fashion designers, salons; but seldom consult an infertility expert or gynecologist before the D-day. They feel proper knowledge about sex before and after marriage is a must for an individual. They also suggest pre marital counseling sessions for couples could help them enjoy a happy married life.

Dr.Rishma Dhillon, consulting obstetrician and gynecologist, Jaslok Hospital and research centre informed,``Sexuality, marriage and fertility are all closely connected. The younger generation is inquisitive to know about sexuality, but very often for wrong reasons. Youngsters have doubts about their own sexuality but have nobody for answers. Parents and teachers may not always know and even if they do, are not the easiest to approach. This gives rise to myths and misconceptions. Many couples coming to us do not even know foreplay techniques. I have been approached by ayurvedic doctors, orthodontists, doctors and affluent couples who are living with their spouses for many years without indulging in proper sexual intercourse.''

Dr. Nandita Palshetkar, infertility specialist, Lilavati Hospital, Bandra receives many infertility cases wherein most couples are unaware about sexual intercourse .She says,``Sexual performance and fertility of a man are so closely associated that his sexual performance suffers when he faces problems with his fertility and vice versa. Therfore; It is not rare to find a couple in whom all conceivable reports favour fertility and yet conception has not occurred despite artificial insemination with donor sperms. While many centres treat women's infertility problems, infertile men have few places to go. This is because the problem is complicated by two distinct aspects: sexually related conscious factors that influence intercourse and unconscious factors such as qualitative and quantitative inadequacies of the sperm.''

Dr.Rakesh Sinha, gynecologist and MD, Beams Hospital at Khar informs that a couple belonging to Mumbai’s high society recently visited him .He adds “They were married for two years and had sex only two times. Also two NRI couples approached me with a similar problem. When marriages are not consummated in such cases; it becomes a serious problem. All awareness from TV and net about sex is more of pornography than education. People need to understand there is a difference between titillation, stimulation and education. To begin with, schoolchildren should be educated in matters of anatomy, sex differentiation, social roles of parents, sexual hygiene and sexual value building.''

“DIL PARDESI HO GAYA “ SCREENED AMONGST SECURITY BLANKET

The Asian Age (Dec 2003)

By Skimmy Gupta

The storming of Republican Party of India (RPI) activists in Bollywood film ‘Dil Pardesi Ho Gaya’ at Gaiety theatre, Bandra on Sunday afternoon and other theatres across Mumbai has put police officials on alert. They are alleging the movie about India and Pakistan relations has certain objectionable dialogues and scenes hurting Indian sentiments. The movie propagating the message of love and peace between people of India and Pakistan stars newcomers Kapil Jhaveri of India and Saloni Aswani of Pakistan is now showing across city screens amongst police protection.

Saawan Kumar, producer-director of movie ‘Dil Pardesi Ho Gaya’ states “Many Ministers of Government machinery like George Fernandes and Delhi chief minister Sheila Dixit have watched my movie. And nobody pointed out any objections in the movie whatsoever, Moreover it was passed by censor board with a U certificate. And it was made ‘tax-free’ in Maharashtra when it was released last Friday. All over India, the movie is being screened in a peaceful manner except Mumbai.”

Saawan also chief of Indian Motion Pictures Producers' Association (IMPPA) said that these kinds of demonstrations are illegal and a sad story. When censors have cleared the movie, they should not behave in such a violent manner. Even RPI leaders saw the movie before, they did not object at that time. And now their strong protest at various theatres across Mumbai is very shocking. Anyway, I am not scared and the movie is running with help of police security.”

Manoj Desai, executive director, Gaiety theatre said, “The damage to theater premises, doors and glass windows is about 1 lakh rupees. About 41,000/- for refund of abrupt show and 60,000/- for other damages to banner, main door in the premises. Further losses were due to cancellation of others shows. The demonstrators were objecting to some scenes in the climax shot. The movie will run anyhow for remaining days. The whole demonstration looked more like an election stunt.”

Bipin Kumar Singh, DCP-Zone IX informed, “The majority of demonstrators belonged to Mahasangh and RPI demonstrated to stop the movie. They broke the glass of the main door and barged inside the theatre premises. They have certain objections to the movie but details are yet to be found out. The case is registered in Bandra Police Station. Further investigations are going on.”

When asked about the whole episode appearing as a publicity stunt; Sawan in an angry tone said, “This is utter non sense. Why would I make my own losses and take law and order in my hand? This is not my first film and don’t need help from such elements to promote my movie. Viewers will decide the fate of the movie.”

EXAM BLUES: STUDENT CONSUMES 148 SLEEPING PILLS

The Asian Age (Nov 2003)

By Skimmy Gupta

The tenth standard board exams are four months away; but the ‘exam blues’ has already started engulfing students. Shweta (name changed), a X th standard student and resident of Thane consumed 148 sleeping pills in one week to seek relief from study stress. Luckily, she survived the overdose and is recuperating at home. The surprising part is three local chemists at Ghodbunder road, Thane: ‘Flora Chemists’ at Vasant Vihar;’Royal Stores’ at Swastik Park and a chemist shop near Madras Café, Gandhi Nagar sold sleeping pills in large quantities to her without medical prescription or adult guidance.

Since past few days; Shweta’s parents were worried about their daughter’s suffering from constant headaches, vomits etc. They took her to nearby clinic for medical aid but had no clue about her indulgence in sleeping pills .On Friday (31st October),a local chemist informed them about their daughter asking sleeping pills from his shop. Then, Shweta revealed that she brought over 150 pills of ‘Valium’ and ’ Alprazolam’ sleeping pills from local chemists:’ Flora’ at Vasant Vihar;’Royal’ at Swastik Park and a chemist shop near Madras Café, Gandhi Nagar. She stated approaching board exams forced her to consume these pills. She also informed that she brought medicine from different shops to avoid any suspicion.

Shweta’s mother on condition of anonymity said, “She also attends extra classes and is quite a bright student. We are still shocked about the whole incident. Chemists selling sleeping pills to children in large quantities without proper medical prescription could be dangerous.”

Shweta's parents brought the case forward to Sulochana Kapil,a social activist at Pokhran Road 2,Thane on Saturday (1st November) morning. Sulochana approached FDA regarding the open sale of sleeping pills. Sulochana told The Asian Age " Sometimes parental/school pressure forces students to take such extreme steps. We are also planning to address this issue at PTA (Parent-Teacher Association) meetings at various schools of the neighborhood. MANAGEMENT GURU VENTURES INTO BOLLYWOOD

The Asian Age (Mar 2004)

By Skimmy Gupta

The setting could not have been any better for announcing the launch of a truly corporatised Hindi feature film in Bollywood. Planman Life announced the launch of its debut Hindi feature film ‘Rok Sako To Rok Lo’ at FICCI – Frames on March 15, 2004. Planman Life presented a true illustration of a corporatised film backed by an extensive research carried on by their consultants. The film ‘Rok Sako To Rok Lo’ is a classic story based on the romance of friendship, the spirit of adventure and the magic of timeless love and launches ten fresh talents in Hindi film industry. Management Guru and noted economist Arindam Chaudhuri marks his debut as a film director.

Professor Chaudhuri - Dean, Centre for Economic Research & Advanced Studies at IIPM (The Indian Institute of Planning & Management, New Delhi) was recently rated as one of the 50 leading thinkers in South Asia by Wilton Park (an organization supported by the European Commission and British foreign office). His latest book ‘Count Your Chickens Before They Hatch’ has been in all national best seller lists.

After being associated with the production and marketing of two Bengali movies in 2001,Arindam marks his debut as a film director. He sais,“Film making is purely business diversification for us. We are making Hindi film as I like Bollywood movies and they are watched by masses. The film is about boys and girls of class 12 depicting their pure friendships, first crush and everlasting memories. I believe films can be made in a corporate manner also. A film director should be called as managing directors. Because if you trust technical department of film and their expertise and allow them to work freely with guidance, they deliver excellent results. We will soon be launching another film this year.”

Arindam added, “I am extremely confident that our cast will be loved by the audiences across the country. Surprisingly, there seems to be quite a dearth of talented fresh faces in the industry. The new pair Yashodhan and Manjari Phadnis in the lead roles will win the hearts of audiences. The discipline in the sets also tempered them to rehearse, practice, and deliver their best for the film. The script, I feel, is the hero of the film. With such a thoroughly developed script, a film cannot go wrong.”

Cinematography has been done by award winning Santosh Thundiyil, appreciated for his works in ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ and ‘Pinjar’.“A lovely script bound and finalized well in advance, an extensive workshop with all the actors, tight budgetary allocation and control using management tools and software are main highlights of the film. Also strict discipline on the sets by all and sundry, sticking to the schedule timelines and a congenial, fun and a supporting atmosphere collectively makes for ‘Rok sako to Rok lo’ as a case study in itself ,”felt Shubho Shekhar Bhattacharya,CEO of the filmed entertainment division of Planman Life and Executive Producer of the film.

CENSORSHIP - A MUST FOR MUSIC VIDEOS

The Asian Age (Apr 2003)

By Skimmy Gupta

The new remix video ‘Chadti Jawaani’ booming on TV is the latest video to receive women’s ire for its objectionable and vulgar video. The video showing mannequin turned females dancing mainly angles on the body parts of the female models. Also in one shot, a female looking into the mirror and pressing her backside (buttocks) with her hands has raised viewer’s eyebrows. The earlier raunchy videos ‘Kaliyon ka chaman’,’Kaanta Laga’ and dozen others have already come under the obscenity meter. But it seems with no censorship rules; these videos are getting bolder and vulgar.

Nirmala Samant Prabhavalkar, chairperson, Maharashtra State Commission For Women, has now taken up her crusade against obsence and raunchy videos. As she told The Asian Age,“ We have already submitted our objection to the song ‘Kaanta Laaga’ to the broadcasting minister R.S Prasad few weeks ago. But the never-ending drama of promoting obscenity through music videos seems to continue. I really feel that time has come that music videos must be screened through censor board because the Indian pop music videos have gone beyond foreign standards. They mainly revolve women’s anatomy. It seems they hold no responsibility towards Indian society. Such videos are just corrupting the minds of small children and youngsters .We are not against portrayal of sensuality of women but the music video makers should understand the difference between obscenity and sensuality.”

Shashwati, singer of the three remixes ‘Kaliyon ka chaman’,’Kaanta Laga’ and ‘Chadti Jawaani’ contested, “Yes, I do agree these music remixes are vulgar to an extent. I feel the music would have been a hit also without exhibiting so much unnecessary obscenity. Infact, it spoils our reputation to an extent that we are a part of such videos. It depends on the video directors about the visual content and we have no say.”

Nirmala, former mayor of Mumbai and High Court advocate added ,“Whenever we have a dialogue with music companies, they justify by saying that they are promoting art through music. But under the pretext of art they are beaming nudity, vulgarity and objectionable videos. Such video makers must understand that we cannot compare ourselves completely with western standards. We have strong bonded families and ethics in our country. I think the music video directors belong to different culture who seldom think twice before producing such thrash videos. And with each music video, they are crossing one more step of nudity ladder. It is a money game, as music companies are losing no time in just remixing beautifully picturised old Hindi songs into obscene remix videos. Whatever it may, we will definitely raise objections against these music videos. The broadcasting minister has liked our suggestions to curb such videos and has promised us to look into the matter.”

Harry Anand, music director opined, “We are not related to the making of these music videos and it entirely depends upon the music company .Sometimes it is quite embarassing to watch such videos with family. We just compose the music and give it to the music company.”

Radhika Rao, maker of the three videos refused to comment.

“NO T.K CHOUDHARY AS C.P” SAY BOMBAY BAZAAR FRANCHISEES

THE ASIAN AGE (Nov 2002)

By Skimmy Gupta

T.K Choudhary ,additional director general of police working under state director general Subhash Malhotra has been receiving flak from the franchisees of Bombay Bazaar Limited, the chain of supermarkets over his probable appointment as the next Police commissioner of Mumbai.Ranjit Choudhary,T.K Choudhary’s son is the Managing director,Bombay Bazaar Limited involved in the alleged multi- crore scam. Also the franchisees feel as they have been duped by Ranjit and appointment of T.K Choudhary as Commissioner might stall the investigations in this scam and they would never get their invested money back. One of the most senior Maharashtrian officer in the ranks, T.K Choudhary has served Mumbai crime branch,as deputy commissioner of police and also joint commissioner of police(law and order).

Shahir ,partner of SAS trading Co,a franchisee of Bombay Bazaar Ltd located at Juhu Lane,Andheri told The Asian Age, “This is clear case of cheating and fraud scam worth over Rs.50 crore with 200 odd franchisees. Ranjit occasionally flaunts his father’s police rank to his franchisees. Thus if T.K Choudhary becomes the next C.P,even my slightest hope of recovering my deposit of Rs.5 lakhs would be over as his son is involved..Thus appointment of T.K Choudhary seems unethical and inapproapriate at this hour.Since my store opening six months back,I have not received even a single commission cheque wherein it was agreed to be given on monthly basis as per the franchisee agreement .”

Vinay Kulkarni,a Bombay Bazaar franchiser at Sena Bhavan Path ,Dadar told,“I feel it is because big people like Ranjit Choudhary are invlolved,I will never get my deposit money back.If they settle all the claims and money of people ,then appointment of T,K Choudhary can be justified .Otherwise it is wrong, as the Bombay Bazaar franchisee experience has been fairly bad as many have lost their peace of mind and money.”

T.K Choudhary, additional Director General of Police said, “Bombay Bazaar controversy is an altogether different matter and civil in nature, in which 5-6 people along my son who started it.And I have nothing to do with it. I personally call it a dispute between the company management and the franchisees. And the problem is that both the parties are adamant. If the franchisers want their money back ,they should file a recovery suit immediately .Honking for publicity will not get them anything. It is absolutely a wrong notion that if I become the Commissioner their case might be subdued, infact I might be able to help them.”

Most franchisees in the city from past couple of months are facing hard time due to non-supply of stocks,no-commission cheques given and highly unprofessional ,irresponsible and maligned attitude of the Bombay Bazaar officials. There have been instances of few franchisee owners even trying to eat poison following the highly careless attitude and fraudulent motive of the company. About 70 franchisees filed complaints in the Andheri metropolitan magistrate’s court and Economic Offences Wing( EOW) has already begun their investigations in this scam.An officer ,EOW investigating the case was unavailable for comments.

Raju Jadhwani, another distributor and franchisee in name of Sangeeta Jadhwani at Kandivili said, “The defaulters should definitely be punished .Being a senior citizen,I have invested my entire savings. Many times I have been asked to wait for 4-5 hours for my money and on 2-3 ocassions I have also fainted. My 12 lakhs rupees are pending but have only got Rs.50,000/- till date ?

"We have stopped the franchisee couple of months back as our Rs.4 lakhs are already lost. The company has not cleared dues till now and if T.K Chaudhary becomes C.P ,I doubt we will get our dues,"wonders M.Todi, another franchisee at Film City,Goregaon.

Today afternoon,A.B Mule, principal, K.K.V college handed over the LC to Luiza.Mule apparently dropped all the conditions and blackmailing terms he had asked Luiza to submit in her application few days ago.All this happened due to the persistent highlighting of the issue in the Asian Age and a strict action by the Bhandup police station.

Sources reveal when Luiza went to collect her certificate to the college, the principal requested her not to pursue the matter.Meanwhile an officer from Bhandup police station called him and asked them to come to the police station.Wherein there Mule was told not to throw his weight around anymore as a principal and grant Luiza the certificate as soon as possible after completing all necessary formalities.Souces from Bhandup police station reveal that due to highlighting of the issue last week, the concerned official was pressurised to take prompt action in this case..

Luiza told The Asian Age,“At the police station ,both statements were recorded and we were asked to sign a letter which stated that the matter has been resolved and that principal will hand me the certificate without any conditions. Now I just want a Xerox copy of the same to be safe in future.”

Inspector D.N Bhandkoli,Bhandup Police Station said, “Both the parties were called and they have gone in for mutual settlement.Nothing was forced upon anybody.Luiza wanted the LC and she has got it.”

Luiza’s mother remarked,“From past one month we were going through hell and never thought Luiza would get the LC.And we had thought she will have to give her studies due tour poor financial conditions. It is all due to my daughter’s sheer determination that she finally got what she deserved” and broke into tears.

Luiza further added,“I have submitted the certificate to Ronald Briganza ,St.Xavier’s Junior college and school,Kanjur Marg and will soon be attending college. Its been about a month since the incident. Now I feel satisfied that after fighting the matter eventually justice dawned on me.Now I just want to concentrate on my career, work hard and make my parents happy.I would like to fulfill their all wishes as they have struggled very hard to bring us up.”

September 18,2002:The Asian Age first highlighted the story of Luiza Lobo(18), F.Y.J.C student of K.K.V Junior College,Bhandup assaulted and badly beaten on her hands by college principal, A.B Mule with dandia sticks allegedly for wearing jeans to the college on September 3,2002.When contacted the principal admitted to the beating and felt that there was nothing wrong in it.

September 20,2002:The Asian age followed the story with a group of students of K.K.V college approached the correspondent to express their sincerity with Luiza and helplessness at the hands of principal alleging “We were threatened by the principal to say on the electronic media on 18th September after the Asian age story that Luiza was wrong and he was right”.Luiza further confirmed these students confided in her that the principal had forcibly taken signatures against me.

September 22,2002:It was published that though Luiza got admission in St.Xavier’s Junior high school and college ,Kanjur Marg but KKV college principal once again started harassing and blackmailing her for issuing her the leaving certificate. He asked her to submit an application mentioning that beating incident between them did not take place and they have good relations. He also wanted Luiza to apologise in writing and withdraw all her complaints and comments given to the press, police and other authorities.

By Skimmy Gupta

The Asian Age broke the story (on 18th September –Wednesday) of Luiza Lobo(18) F.Y.J.C student, K.K.V Junior College,Bhandup assaulted by college principal, A.B Mule allegedly for wearing jeans to the college. On 3rd September,Luiza was beaten badly on her hands by the principal with dandia sticks. When contacted the principal admitted to the correspondent of hitting Luiza with a stick for wearing jeans and felt that there was nothing wrong in doing so.At present Luiza is terribly upset and traumatized by this assault that she has stopped going to the college since that day.

Luiza told The Asian Age, “They are my sincere friends and outside college they said that they will definitely support me throughout till the day I get justice. But it is due to their unaffordable conditions and fear of getting sacked by the principal that led them to say everything against me.But the facts are facts .They will not change anyhow even if tomorrow the whole college stands against me.”

Evavelil,Luiza’s sister also had to bear the ill beahavoiur from him as she told,“When I went to the principal to solve the issue amicably after he had beaten my sister, he threatened saying ‘If you go ahead in police with this matter, you will have to bear unpleasant consequences. And also a big red mark on Luiza’s leaving certificate will restrict her admission to any college of the city.’Further he stated in a highly sarcastic tone that if my sister was so fond of jeans ,tell her to join night college. That means he is not stringent on his own rules. If he cannot allow jeans at day then why at night?I was shocked to hear all this.”

Luiza further alleged that yesterday evening some of these students confided in her that the principal had forcibly taken signatures against me. She has already launched several complaints in Bhandup police station.

Another college student on condition of anonymity said, “Our principal is very strict and highly abusive at times. Every morning we go to college with fear of what will happen today. We have no other option but to stay quiet and obey him.I hope he learns a lesson from Luiza’s case and tries to change himself.”

PSI S.Lombte,Bhandup Police station said, “We have full support and co-operation for the girl.If at all she is scared to go alone to take leaving certificate from the principal ,some official can accompany and help her.But before that she has to complete all the formalities as per the college authorities.”

THE ASIAN AGE (SEPT 2002)

By Skimmy Gupta

A F.Y.J.C student of K.K.V College,Village Road, Bhandup, was assaulted by the principal allegedly for wearing jeans to the college on 3rd September.Louiza Lobo,a 18 year old resident of Bhandup was beaten badly on her hands by A.B Mule, the college principal with dandia sticks. She is so traumatized by the incident that she has stopped going to the college since that day.At present she is approaching the women cells, education ministry to get some help and justice.

Louiza narrated the whole story to The Asian Age, “During college admission on 3rd July,it was not specified that jeans etc are prohibited.I confirmed with the principal and he said that there were no such dress restrictions.Suddenly on 30 th August ,he decided strict Punjabi dress for girls and boys will only wear shirts and trousers.Coming from low family,I cannot afford new Punjabi dresses and have only couple of jeans and clothes .On 3 rd September,I went his office requested him to allow me wear such dresses. But he suddenly brandished out dandia sticks and started hitting me hard on my thumb bones and the hands. He also abused me in the filthiest of languages.Even when my sister tried to mediate in the matter,he even abused her.He further threatened saying he will issue her a leaving certificate with a red mark. Also he said angrily that if I continue in this college,he will make my life miserable.”

Louiza added, “Though it was not affordable but still I paid Rs.2500/- as donation. That was also not told before hand.My both parents are bed stricken and we two sisters run the house by taking tuitions and working as receptionists. This man destroyed my career ,money and has put a question mark on my future. I have launched several complaints in Bhandup police station but no action has been taken. My hands have still not healed and bones are weak and paining. What is my fault ,will somebody tell me ?”

Deepak (name changed) ,K.K.V college student said, “I can only afford only 1 jeans and 2 t-shirts .From last 4 days ,he is not allowing me to enter the college. What should I do in this case beg, borrow, steal to comply with his wishes.I think I will have no option but to leave the college.”

Police sources reveal that Mule was a former police official .PSI S.Lombte ,Bhandup Police station said, “ I will definitely look into the matter .the girl need not be afraid of anyone. No one is permitted to go against the law.Anytime she can approach us with her complaints and we will definitely take speedy and strict action against the principal.”

A.B Mule,principal,K.K.V College admitted he hit Louiza with a stick as he told The Asian Age,“It is my college and I can do whatever I want.So what if I have given a beating when no student listens to me?If I have whacked her 2 sticks ,what’s the big deal?As per the dress code of the college ,the students should ask at the time of admission and it is not our duty to tell them.As far as jeans are concerned ,I hate jeans and t-shirts and after wearing such clothes all students become characterless.Whosoever will not listen to me he /she will get a beating. As far as Louiza is concerned let her go to any extent.I will try to give the school leaving certificate in 4 days if she puts an application now.”

Jaya Menon, advocate high court commented,“Beating is a criminal offence and noone has a right to do so in a democratic country.Since the girl is major she is entitled to register police complaint and if due to some reason police action is not taken, she on her own can file a written complaint with magistrate of the jurisdiction. In such cases ,imprisonment is upto 2 years followed by penalty.”

SCHOOL BUSES PLAY VULGAR MUSIC

THE ASIAN AGE (AUG 2002)

By Skimmy Gupta

Parents of a school in Andheri (east)have geared up to complain and object to the vulgar filmi music blared on the school buses.Parents say that this nonsense has been going on since a long time though they have requested the driver several times to stop this vulgar music. The drivers are least bothered about the age group of students traveling and play all Bollywood ‘s seductive, raunchy numbers like ‘sexy sexy’,paas aao na’ etc.Nothing has happened and even the contractors of private buses have shut down their eyes.

B.Neerja ,resident of Andheri(E) whose 13 year old daughter is admitted to the school in Andheri(E) said “Parents have fixed a contract with private buses for our kids conveyance. It so happened that few days back ,my daughter was carrying an extra project report. So I went into the bus to help her sit in the seat. The moment I entered the bus,I was shocked to hear Karishma’s vulgar and raunchy song ‘Sexy Sexy, mujhe log bolein’ blaring from the bus deck. And kids being kids were trying to dance like the star and the driver and conductors were enjoying their dances.Seeeing to this I realized that this is a crucial problem and something should be done.”

Payal Bakshi (name changed) ,another parent said “Seeing the rise of sexual abuse cases on the rise and most of them happening ,especially on school buses. It forces us to talk up the matter more seriously now..Be it anytime of the day these vulgar songs are played non stop at a deafening volume. In the mornings, they can atleast play some prayer songs and lower the volume. We should all get together and stop this menace .Somewhere the line has to be drawn”

Dr.Rashmin Cholera, consulting psychiatrist,Rajawadi Hospital,Ghatkopar told The Asian Age “ Such music can definitely lead to negative effect. It should be stopped,or changed like for instance nursery rhymes etc can be played A child in today’s society is already bombarded with vulgar stuff through media and information technology,so one should avoid its portrayal as far as possible, and let the child grow in natural environment ,as sometimes child can also go into disturbed state which can be dangerous and can lead to unpleasant consequences in the long run.”

Franco D’Costa,Akshay travels, at Marol and private bus contractor to the school said ,”From past four years, nobody has complained to me.If they don’t want it, I will stop playing the music. I think my music is very soft and light, but now I’ll take care as a good samaritarian ,that no vulgar stuff is played .But today’s children also want music all the time or they say kya khatara bus hai .So we have to see every thing.”

TREES & MONSOON

THE ASIAN AGE (JUN 2002)

By Skimmy Gupta

Mumbai trees are falling down, falling down, falling down every year.Monsoons, if on one hand brings relief from scorching heat and unbearable humidity. On the other hand, trees all over Mumbai fall at a rapid speed.

“ More than 3000 trees fall every monsoons in the city. Also BMC is responsible for losing more than 80% coconut trees of the city have fallen or dried,” says S.Kumar Shah, horticulturist and former member of tree authority who has been instumental in planting about lakhs of trees from last 25 years.”

Shah says, “When one tree falls I feel that my one son has died. I have received numerous complaints that the BMC staff is busy taking private contracts,so,where would they be bothered about falling trees. The situation has got worse from last year .Time has come for active public and effective political involvement BMC and NGO’S have shun away their responsibility from tree protection. We need more Babubhai’s today (who was instrumental in planting and supervising thousands of trees in entire Juhu Scheme ).Chipko movement in case of trees should be started again.”

He further added" The number of trees Mumbai loses every monsoons due to BMC'S negligence is much higher then those lost through natural calamity. We lose more than 3000 trees every year if counted big and small. It is absolute negligence of BMC department. There is a whooping budget of approximately in crs .sanctioned by the garden department, still trees are suffering The budget allotted for trees is not properly planned. Also the planning of plantation department requires who is fully equipped with knowledge about environment and trees, but when maintainence goes into the hands of ignorant and uneducated people the problem starts. Every year 75 to 80 year old matured trees are falling and a large part of nature is suffering.I don't understand the authorities do not realize the natural phenomenon of oxygen generated by trees.”

The Asian Age spoke to horticulturists from different parts of Mumbai to gauge their views, research and insight on drastic falling of trees this monsoon and the main common point found was that the negligent attitude and unplanned strategies by BMC authorities are a great deal responsible for trees to lose their lives just on onset of monsoons.

Nita Mishra,a horticulturist from Ghatkopar said, “The roots and stems of the trees of the city have become weak. And during monsoons the gusty winds and torrential rain brings most of the trees down.”

Ashok lalwani ,horticulturist,Vriksha Nursery,Vile Parle stated,“Today most of the roads are enclosed by concrete pavements, thus making the roots of the trees weak.Lot of diggings around the trees throughout the year add to damaging of roots. Most of the trees appear green from the top are infact very dry from the roots and base.It is very sad that nature is being ignored today and most of the environmentalist groups do not value this part of nature.A lot of periphery around trees should be kept free and regular pruning by concerned authorities will lessen the trees from growing weak and toppling during monsoon.”

S.A Mali, offcer in charge,Kandivili Fire Station informed, “At an average we are receiving 4-5 calls daily from our area which extends from Goregaon to Dahisar. It is the start of the monsoons and so one can omagine how many trees are falling.”

An officer at Andheri Fire Station said that already we have lost around 15 trees in our fire station jurisdiction.

HOW TO SAVE TREES :HORTICULTURISTS

1.Trees planted 3-4 feet deep have a better anchorage and offer more resistance to monsoons.
2.Before monsoons the pruning of trees helps in balancing them.
3.Trees planted on road sides have scattered branches and transportation knock them mercilessly resulting in weakening of trees. The branches should be cut in such a way including size and style so that gusty winds and breeze should pass through the tree freely and easily.
4.A good plantation program takes 2-3 years for contemplation.,detailed study and implementation.
5.A tree should always have a basin/boundary at the bottom due to the gradual spreading of roots.

S.Kumar Shah opines, “Seeing the grievous problem,I have decided to form a ‘tree lovers group’ wherein problems and emergencies in case of fallen trees will be taken care of.For instance ,the photo of any tree falling or being cut in Mumbai could be send to us noting time, date ,area and authority responsible. If any tree needs immediate care like root infection etc will be looked at and responded to at the earliest.Thirdly more and more people should co-operate at this juncture.”
