SCHOOL BUSES PLAY VULGAR MUSIC

THE ASIAN AGE (AUG 2002)

By Skimmy Gupta

Parents of a school in Andheri (east)have geared up to complain and object to the vulgar filmi music blared on the school buses.Parents say that this nonsense has been going on since a long time though they have requested the driver several times to stop this vulgar music. The drivers are least bothered about the age group of students traveling and play all Bollywood ‘s seductive, raunchy numbers like ‘sexy sexy’,paas aao na’ etc.Nothing has happened and even the contractors of private buses have shut down their eyes.

B.Neerja ,resident of Andheri(E) whose 13 year old daughter is admitted to the school in Andheri(E) said “Parents have fixed a contract with private buses for our kids conveyance. It so happened that few days back ,my daughter was carrying an extra project report. So I went into the bus to help her sit in the seat. The moment I entered the bus,I was shocked to hear Karishma’s vulgar and raunchy song ‘Sexy Sexy, mujhe log bolein’ blaring from the bus deck. And kids being kids were trying to dance like the star and the driver and conductors were enjoying their dances.Seeeing to this I realized that this is a crucial problem and something should be done.”

Payal Bakshi (name changed) ,another parent said “Seeing the rise of sexual abuse cases on the rise and most of them happening ,especially on school buses. It forces us to talk up the matter more seriously now..Be it anytime of the day these vulgar songs are played non stop at a deafening volume. In the mornings, they can atleast play some prayer songs and lower the volume. We should all get together and stop this menace .Somewhere the line has to be drawn”

Dr.Rashmin Cholera, consulting psychiatrist,Rajawadi Hospital,Ghatkopar told The Asian Age “ Such music can definitely lead to negative effect. It should be stopped,or changed like for instance nursery rhymes etc can be played A child in today’s society is already bombarded with vulgar stuff through media and information technology,so one should avoid its portrayal as far as possible, and let the child grow in natural environment ,as sometimes child can also go into disturbed state which can be dangerous and can lead to unpleasant consequences in the long run.”

Franco D’Costa,Akshay travels, at Marol and private bus contractor to the school said ,”From past four years, nobody has complained to me.If they don’t want it, I will stop playing the music. I think my music is very soft and light, but now I’ll take care as a good samaritarian ,that no vulgar stuff is played .But today’s children also want music all the time or they say kya khatara bus hai .So we have to see every thing.”
