Diamonds worth 2 crores seized at airport

The officers of the Air Intelligence Unit of the commissionerate of customs,C.S International Airport ,Mumbai seized diamonds worth approx. 2 crores from a lady passenger of Iranian origin on 18th October.The diamonds were finely concealed in plastic jars of mango pickles.
On the basis of intelligence ,a 58 year lady passenger Mrs.Molok Boloky and her baggage was offloaded from the Iranian airways flight No.IR-811 to Tehran(IRAN).She holds an Iranian passport no.I-2161643 and was departing for Iran. This seizure has resulted in the recovery of assorted cut and totally polished diamonds weighing 4,175.42 carats and valued at Rs .1,65,02,194/-(in the local market value (LMV))and 1,98,02,633/-( in the international market). They were concealed in plastic jars containing mango pickles,which she was carrying in her checked –in –baggage.The diamonds were packed in different quantities in different packings.And the packings has several foldings and hidden admist the pickle thus the baggage went untraced through the security .Thus she boarded the plane along with her baggage containing diamonds.But later interception by officials resulted in the seizure.
Rajinder Singh,Deputy Commisioner,AIU told The Asian Age “The lady is a resident of Hyderabad but of Iranian nationality.She is a housewife and her husband runs a hotel in Hyderabad.As the seized diamonds were attempted to be smuggled out of India ,hence are liable for confiscation under provisions of Customs Act,1962.She has confessed her crime and is under judicial custody and case has been registered under section 113 which means attempted illegal export.”
Y.G Parande ,Customs Commissioner ,C.S.I Airport said “Although she was able toi clear the security check and boarded the plane successfully.The plane was about to fly off within few minutes but the timely intelligence of our officers led our team into prompt action.And immediately we gave instructions the pilot to halt the plane.The lady passenger was checked again and the diamonds were recovered.We are further interrogating her sources and her smuggling route.Also the origin of diamonds and their actual motive of smuggling through this route is being traced.Further investigations are going on.”
