By Skimmy Gupta

Dr.Bimal Chhajer M.D, a leading consultant cardiologist and Cardiac rehabilitation Specialist is director of SAAOL (Science And Art Of Living ) Health Centre,Delhi. Dr.Bimal, a pioneer in non –evasive cardiology in India was in city to release his latest book “Reversal of Heart Disease in 5 easy steps” .He claims if these five steps are followed properly, it can solve Coronary Heart Disease and reverse these blockages. Skimmy Gupta spoke to Dr.Bimal Chhajer:

Q.Is heart disease one of major disease in India?

A.India has the highest number of heart patients in the world both in numbers and percentage. According to WHO report, the number was about 5 crores in 2001 which is expected to touch 10 crore by the year 2010.In 1998 only, about 28 lakhs people died of cardiovascular disease in India.

Q.Why don’t you suggest bypass surgery to your patients?

A.I feel these bypass and angioplasty are short cuts to make fast money and immediate relief to patients. Whether he survives or not is a different case. Today, Doctors have to understand a blockage in heart have not come up suddenly but is a result of food habits and lifestyle of many years. If the habits can be changed and a healthy lifestyle adopted, the blockages can be reversed and leave a man fit and fine

Q.What are main five steps to prevent heart attack and bypass surgeries?
A.The five steps are Education-which leads to positive health behaviour;Food –should be completely oil free, vegetarian with lot of anti oxidants and fibres;Stress Management -must be controlled by self analysis and working on methods to avoid stress ; Yoga Meditation –a must for every heart patients (30-40 minutes daily);Exercise-walking is second best exercise.

Q.Do you agree bypass surgery is not required in many cases?
A. Around 90 % of heart patients do not require bypass surgery. Bypass and angioplasty are moneymaking tools; it is like telling a heart patient ‘go for bypass or you will die’. Because lakhs of rupees can be earned through one operation by blackmailing one’s fear.

Q.How many heart patients have adopted your treatment?
A.About 5000 patients are being treated at our camps at four metros. Most of them had been advised to undergo bypass surgery but they do not require anything of that sort .But following our pattern of treatment, they are showing signs of healthy life and positive thinking.

Q What is reaction of your friends in medical fraternity on your method of treatment?
A.They are also conducting bypass surgeries as other doctors and making very good money. Its become a very big lobby of medical professionals encouraging expensive heart treatment even when most of the patients cannot afford it. They very well know what they are doing, but show their helplessness. On the other hand they do encourage my way of treating heart patients. Its unfortunate that till today none has shown any interest, neither they have come forward to adopt my methods, even when they know it is effective.

Q.Why is Heart ailment on the rise in urban India?
A. High blood pressure or hypertension is the main silent killers. India has estimated 50 million patients suffering from hypertensions. High blood pressure is also known to increase risks of stroke by 20 % and coronary heart diseases by 15 % and the causes of hypertensions are many. Overweight, wrong food habits especially in salt diet, low intake of potassium and calcium and high fat diet, psychosocial factors, lack of physical activity etc. Smoking and high blood pressure is a lethal combination.
If we are able to maintain cholesterol less than 130;oil in your blood less than 130mg,Blood pressure 120/80 and blood sugar (fasting) below 100-the chances of heart attacks reduce to great extent.
