By Skimmy Gupta

Dr.Rakesh Sinha, Mumbai’s leading gynecological Endoscopic surgeon and Consultant Endoscopic Surgeon at city’s top hospitals has been listed in Limca Book of Records 2003.Dr.Sinha and his team from Bombay Endoscopy Academy and Centre for Minimally Invasive Surgery (BEAMS) hospital, Khar entered record books for conducting two unusual operations.9 years back, Dr.Sinha set up BEAMS –one of largest speciality Center for Gynecological Endoscopy and one of India’s few training centers imparting animated laboratory training to surgeons and gynecologists from all over the world.

Dr.Sinha and Dr.Neela Warty removed a fibroid weighing 3.4 kgs including the largest, which measured upto 20 cms X 12 cms from uterus of a 38-year-old lady Noorjahen Markar. In a laproscopic operation, several fibroids were removed through a minute hole of 5-10 mm. In another surgery, Dr.Sinha and his team removed a fibroid uterus measuring 21 cms and weighing 2.7 kgs; almost as large as a newborn baby from a 44-year-old lady of Mumbai.

Dr.Sinha, managing director of BEAMS and board member of International Society of Gynecological Endoscopy says “BEAMS is now a 32 bedded super specialty hospital for women with its scope extending from endoscopic surgeries for women, maternity to training of surgeons. About 20% of women in the reproductive age have fibroids i.e non-malignant tumors in the uterus. About 15-lakh women world over get their uterus removed and 30% of these cases are due to fibroid formation. Today over 80% women can avoid open surgery with endoscopic surgery.“

Dr. Sinha is a Mind Management Consultant conducting ‘Mind Control ‘programs for Mumbai police senior officials and seminars for city’s top corporates and educational institutes. He has conducted over 6000 endoscopies and trained 10,000 surgeons/Gynecologists in workshops. He has also been awarded postdoctoral clinical fellowship in Endoscopy at the Royal Free Hospital in London (1993-94) and Rajiv Gandhi Rashtriya Ekta Award for excellence in medical profession for year 2002.

A pioneer for Endoscopic and laser surgeries for women and speaking about advantages of endoscopy, Dr.Sinha told The Asian Age “In recent years, there has been significant paradigm shift in gynecology field. Conventionally hysterectomy is performed through a large cut in the abdomen involving surgery. But through endoscopy only three incisions are made, wherein an endoscope in inserted in patients abdomen through a tiny incision and internal image appearing on screen enables to remove fibroids. Endoscopy helps patient avoid post operation trauma, bleeding and scarring is negligible and patient can go home after a day in the hospital. Besides tackling fibroids, Endoscopy is used effectively in clearing blocked fallopian tubes, removing ovarian cysts and rectifying ectopic pregnancies.”
