India’s first, Dedicated, Free Infertility Helpline launched in mid September 2003 is evoking overwhelming response. The helpline numbers 98202 24000 and 98922 11112 constantly ringing are guiding people on therapeutic options and the concept of preventable infertility. The helpline is the brainchild of Dr.Nandita Palshetkar and Dr. Hrishikesh Pai -gynecologists and infertility specialists, Lilavati Hospital and Dr. Rishma Pai, gynecologist at Jaslok Hospital. At an average of 300 calls per month, the helpline has till date catered to over 1000 calls on infertility calls right from Maharashtra, Gujarat and other states of India.
The trio with their vast and varied experience of 10-12 years in infertility field feel the launch the Helpline was aptly timed and they are constantly trying to fill some sort of void in life of people by spreading awareness and education through this medium. They sense that basic advantage and popularity of the helpline lies in the fact that the clear remains anonymous but gets all related information, education and guidance on infertility.
Dr Hrishikesh Pai, Gynaecologist & Infertility specialist at Lilavati Hospital says “The problem of infertility afflicts nearly 20 million couples in India. One out of every 10 married couples fail to have children even after trying for one year without contraception. Nearly 80 % of these patients would achieve success with modern yet simple therapies .The helpline seeks to clear myths about infertility, accelerate the management of problem and also introduce the option for callers.”
Dr Nandita Palshetkar, consultant gynecologist at Babies And Us Fertility Centre says “It is important that women have kids early in their lifetime with proper education and guidance on this issue. Times are changing and couples who fail to conceive are calling the helpline for advice without much hesitation or family pressures.”
