DON'T REVEAL MUCH WHILE CHATTING
THE ASIAN AGE(Aug 2002)
By Skimmy Gupta
Suneeta (name changed),a 35 year old housewife with well settled family of husband and 2 children was getting bored at home.So to kill time and curb loneliness ,she casually started chatting. And started getting involved with the chat friend slowly. And at one point she got so obsessed she started ignoring altogether her husband, children, their routine and just wanted to chat day and night.Apart from her mental and physical health deteriorating due to excessive chatting,at present her marriage is on the rocks.Wherin the husband wants to divorce her as soon as possible.
The invent of Cyber technology was to bring people of the world closer.Rather than chatting being a good source to kill free time, the rampant ‘Chatting on net’ has often led to rise in cases of school children being exposed to sex education, teenagers becoming impatient, marriages breaking up.Even city psychologists feel that this chatting business is becoming a problem of whole community and it is high time society should be vocal and do something about this negatively serious issue. As they claim that chatting if uncontrolled and unsupervised can be very dangerous.
Chat language: Chatters apart from using common terms like asl, lol,… are now using various new short terms in ever developing chat language.Nowadays ,while leaving the chat room, regular surfers often depart by typing gn(good night),sd(sweet dreams),bfn(bye for now),gbu(God bless you),tst(tomorrow same time).Other commonly terms like tc(take care),c u(see you) are still randomly used by netsurfers.
Anjali Chabbria ,psychiatrist and psychotherapist told The Asian Age “We as parents sometimes feel proud when our 10 year old child is exposed to net.But little parents know that the child is also being exposed to dangers and negativity of chatting. This chatting problem has definitely increased over past one year. And the age group including 7th std school children are getting involved as they get exposed to sexual interests which is not suitable at that age. Also there have been cases and instances wherein the females have eloped from home with their net friend .They want to marry them and do as per the other partner wishes. Many matured and intelligent people are not bothered even to break up their happy marriage and well settled family.I feel schools are still hesitant about such issues of chatting, sex education, inter personal relationships.”
Anjali suggests that this problem can be reduced to quite an extent by:
Demarkation in relationship with the chat friend
The Issue should be talked about and not argued within the family
There should be better ways of communication and transparency within the family
Addressing of such issues have become vital especially at schools & homes
Help of counselors should be taken
Prathmesh Kava, owner of a cyber café at Juhu says “Rather than the official and professional work, majority of the people come here to chat.People of all age groups from senior citizens to school going kids are falling into it.Sometimes people do not realize they are sitting for hours to hours chatting on the net.And we have seen mixed emotions, sometimes even girls start crying.”
Parineeta Goomer, collegian says “Me and my friends chat regularly. And you just cannot let yourself getting involved and it is a good outlet for letting out feelings and emotions which otherwise lie dormant in our conservative society. So what big deal?”
