By Skimmy Gupta
For the past one year, Shah Rukh Khan has been nursing a bad back. Well the actor finally has decided to go in for a major operation. Skimmy Gupta finds out about his ailments, his filmfare award and his next release, Chalte Chalte.
Even as you read this article, Shah Rukh Khan may be with his doctor getting the latest report on his back problem. The actor sprained a muscle in his neck in the December of 2001 while shooting. The niggling pain got worse on his flight back to Mumbai.Although the superstar had gone for treatment last year to London, the pain had aggravated and will now need an operation. Shah Rukh will be in London for a month to have a titanium disc inserted in the neck region. Following this major operation, Shah Rukh will be in a cast and out of action till end April.
But its with happy memories that the actor is leaving the country. A rich haul of awards for portraying the alcoholic in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas, has given the superstar a new status. In the past, Shah Rukh has got accolades and brickbats for his performances, but none so vocal for his acting in Devdas. Most critics dismissed his performance and compared it to previous greats like Dilip Kumar and KS Saigal. This has not had any effect on Shah Rukh as he says, “I am proud to have played the role as Shah Rukh Khan, as I am not a good actor and I don’t know how to act.”
This operation has put several projects of the actor on the back burner. The most affected will be choreographer turned director Farha Khan’s debut project being produced under the Shah Rukh Khan banner. The first schedule was shot in Darjeeling, which has Sushmita Sen and Sanjay Khan’s son Zayed Khan in key roles. Shooting for the film will resume as soon as Shah Rukh Khan is ready for action. Before leaving for London, Shah Rukh was in a hurry to complete shooting for Karan Johar’s home production, Kal Ho Na Ho being directed by Nikhil Advani.
Devdas was the India’s official entry for the Oscar’s this year. Although it failed to reach the final five, the actor has no complaints. He says, “Devdas will always be special as the film was made with a lot of difficulties and working with a director like Sanjay Leela Bhansali whose vision of cinema is so different. There can never be any regrets associated with this film. “
Shah Rukh Khan’s first release this year will be Chalte Chalte directed by Aziz Mirza. The actor is paired opposite Rani Mukherjee for the first time after their superhit film, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. This role was originally offered to Aishwarya Rai.Currently post production for the film is going on and if everything continues on schedule, Chalte Chalte will be released during the last week of June or mid July. A treat coming up for Shah Rukh Khan fans, this monsoon.
