SUNIL SHETTY TURNS COMMENTATOR

THE ASIAN AGE (FEB 2003)

By Skimmy Gupta

” Desh pe vaar aur cricket mein haar, ek Hindustani kabhi sahen nahin kar sakta” these are the dialogues that bollywood macho man Sunil Shetty said in recent film ‘Kaante’. Words he means even now as India prepare themselves to face England and Pakistan in the league matches of the World Cup. And as he picks up the mantle as host and commentator for ESPN. Skimmy Gupta spoke to Sunil Shetty.

Q>I believe your fans will see you in a new role very shortly?

A> Yes, I have signed up with ESPN and will be leaving for South Africa on the 23rd. It’s a ten day trip. And if India proceeds to the later stages, I will most certainly fly back. I will be doing a series of shows for the channel as well as interviewing the cricketers. And it will be from my perspective…however the most thrilling thing is that my 7-year-old son will accompany me. But before that I have to complete my shooting schedule for J P Dutta’s LOC.

Q>How did you react to the India’s disastrous loss to Australia?

A>I do agree it was one of the worst matches I have seen. But I empathize with the Indian cricket team. The whole nation’s fury was unjustified I feel. Our cricketers should not have to worry about their family’s security while batting or fielding. It was very uncalled for. Now is the time to support the team and make them realize that they are not alone.

Q> Since when have you been passionately involved with the game?
A> My affinity with cricket is a long one and I am glad both Vinod Kambli and Ajay Jadeja acted in some films with me. The one with Kambli called Annarth released a couple of month’s back and the one with Jadeja called Khel in on the floors currently.

Q>Do you feel Indian team can win the world Cup?

A> Seeing their performance against Zimbabwe, I can see rejuvenated Indian teams who have a point to prove. Sachin Tendulkar is in fine nick; Ganguly has made an impact with his bowling. Srinath is in peak form. Kaif and Mongia came good with a few runs. I see a united team effort that can take on any side now.

Q> Who are your favorites cricket commentators?

A> My favorite cricket commentators are Sunil Gavaskar, Navjot Singh Suddhu, Ravi Shastri, Sanjay Manjrekar and Harsha Bhogle. And my all time favorite international commentator is Tony Greig. The way he exudes excitement when he gives his running commentary is an art.

Q>: Any message for the Indian fans?

A> I just want to tell the fans that the Indian team is in a foreign nation and they need our support rather than our ridicule. So lets all pray for some stupendous performances by a team who has the potential to lift the World Cup in South Africa. So lets give it our best shot.
