THE ASIAN AGE (NOV 2002)

Film star and danseuse Padmashree Hema Malini will perform a charity show of her new dance ballet “Draupadi” on Saturday, 23rd November 2002 at Shanmukhananda Hall, Matunga. The proceeds of the event will help in development of an upcoming Bhaktivedanta Swami Mission School at Iskcon temple, Juhu. The collected funds will be utilized for updating school’s infrastructure and providing better facilities to the students.
While her love of Indian dance and efforts to promote the same are well documented, with ‘Draupadi’, Hema Malini breaks new ground with new techniques interwoven in the narrative. The ballet promises to please the purists and also newer constituencies interested in the classical Indian dance forms. The show shall have a highly rich-international look complete with beautiful periodic costumes, magnificent sets, melodious music, apt video clippings and above all the electrifying presence of Hema Malini in glittering costumes and jewellery.
Hema Malini performs the inspiring life of Draupadi –one of the central figures of epic Mahabharata. Presented by Natyavihar Kala Kendra, this spectacular dance drama depicts Draupadi as a true Lord Krishna devotee, strong willed woman of no mean birth, in possession of great strength of character, mind and intellect who is submitted to acts of reprehensively behavior at every turn. Draupadi speaks for herself only at end of Kurukshetra war, when she decries war and its cataclysmic fallouts. She prays for a golden era of peace and rightness for this earth. She gives clarion call to women to fight their own battles, become fearless and brave and emerge strong in face of all humiliation, as protection of Krishna Sakha will not be available in this Kaliyuga age.
Surdas Prabhuji, committee member, Iskcon temple told The Asian Age “It is the first time such an event is being organized for fund raising and we are hopeful to raise sufficient money, which would be of great use for upgradation of students’ facilities. It is a warm gesture by the well-known public figures Hema to come forward and help the cause. With her spiritual bent of mind (she is a Krishna devotee), it is her way of contributing for betterment of a resource to help enrolled students get better educational facilities, well equipped libraries, laboratories, computers etc. International Society set up Bhaktivedanta Swami Mission School for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) in 1988 at Juhu. The school places great emphasis on all round development of students’ personality, including the spiritual and cultural dimensions. An ICSE-affiliated school with high academic standards has been proved by excellent Board X Exam results over past four years. The school also focuses on importance of Vedic literature –the core of Indian culture and teaches students the meaning of human values in todays’ difficult times and the world facing threats of terrorism and an air of hatred.”
