SUMMER HOLIDAYS –BEWARE OF HOUSE ROBBERY
WEST SIDE PLUS (TIMES OF INDIA- APR 2003)
By Skimmy Gupta
Come summer holidays, Mumbaites with their family and friends rush to hill stations and native places far from hustle and bustle of city life. Before planning the holidays, one must be absolutely sure about their house and house belongings in their absence. In past few years, there has been a significant rise in house breaking and robbery cases in summer holiday’s period in Andheri’s residential areas. As people go out for an average of 8-10 days, it normally gives sufficient time for miscreants mainly the informants and servants network to carry out a big burglary. Andheri Police Station officials also agree that during the months of April to June, people must be extremely careful of their house safety. They must take all the precautions and preventions necessary to prevent any such act of robbery before embarking on a fun trip.
Vilas Rathod, Inspector, D.N Nagar Police Station, New Link Road told West Side Plus, “ Yes, its true the cases of house breaking increase about 25 to 30 percent in vacations as most people are out of town. As far as police is concerned, the police personals are insufficient for our big jurisdiction. We need more police force for the area. Earlier we had 10 people for patrolling, but we might add 5 more police officials for the summer vacations ahead.”
Another police official, Versova Police Station said, “We must understand that if given a chance no servant will miss it and one must be extra vigilant to avoid such mishappenings during summer vacations. People’s careless attitude can lead to dangerous consequences. “
Arun Waghmare, Senior Police Inspector, Oshiwara police station feels, ” Since last week we have increased patrolling and also started taking public meetings. We have given public guidelines to be extra careful in summers .If they plan to go for a vacation, they must tell their neighbour and relatives. They can also inform the police if they go for a long vacation.”
BEFORE YOU EMBARK ON SUMMER HOLIDAY
Never reveal your holiday schedule before your servant/milkman/watchman and unknown person
Ensure your windows, doors and ventilations are doubly locked. Install emergency alarms, if necessary
Keep a set of keys to your reliable relative/friend to monitor your house regularly
Inform your relatives or trustable neighbors
Update the local police with journey details (in case of long holidays)
