WEST SIDE PLUS (TIMES OF INDIA-AUG 2002)

By Skimmy Gupta

“My only mission now is to raise our 3 year old son Siddhant Nair in the reflection of his father and use my professional ability to wipe tears & ease peoples pain in this world, ”says Supriya Nair, wife of late Maj.Rajesh Nair who lost his life fighting militants in the Kashmir valley last year.Displaying a grit character ,strong will power and a helping hand to people in need,Supriya is effortlessly improving people’s lives though workshops/lectures on parental guidance and group therapy counselling.

Maj. Rajesh Nair graduated in chemistry from Mumbai university in 1970 with a dream to join the army. For his bravery and gallantry ,he has been honoured posthumously with following awards:Somia plaque of sacrifice,State governments copper plaque,Badge of sacrifice,Certificate of honor,Bhagatsingh martyr award
and Sena medal.

Recalling the tragic incident Supriya says, “It was Diwali celebration on November 15,2001 but at that time my husband Maj.Rajesh Nair posted in Doda(J & K) was fighting a gruesome battle with hardcore militants. He laid down his precious life while fighting Abu Tala.Even after a bullet pierced his heart he held on to dear life, miraculously managed to save and pull his comrade Maj. Jhonson Lobo out of the firing field.Rajesh was one man with strong ethics & discipline who gave away his life leaving his family orphaned.Does any one ever realize that the tricolor many often discard, brings home a martyr back to his wife who he loved dearer than life itself ?”

Supriya is a M. A. Clinical Psychology (university of Mumbai) and P. G. diploma counseling psychology. She has also done Specialization group therapy( preventive intervention). She is conducting workshops/lectures on parental guidance in Mumbai and Pune.Talking about importance of Parental guidance ,Supriya says, “In todays modern world, parents usually feel that kids are acting difficult on them, but it is all in our hands.Parents are often blamed for child’s upbringing as they have not been trained. We follow more of trial & error mode of child rearing due to faulty assumption that motherhood is a natural process and will come automatically as a result of giving birth. But today PET, prenatal & post natal training, couple therapy, marital therapy are the most recent researched applications that can shift trial and error trends to more authentic techniques of child rearing.Psychologists & trained social workers can impart this training as it involves patience to imbibe these modes of functioning. Change is inevitable purposeful change and increases effectively.”.

Speaking on the advantages of Group therapy in todays times ,she told West Side Plus, “As a Psychologist, I often wonder, what is it that keeps people from bringing out the best in themselves and others. I have very frequently observed that human beings spend a lot of energy only adjusting to the all-encompassing stresses of daily life. The result frequently is a stressed out body and a burnt out soul. This is where group-work comes to tremendous aid.Individual psychotherapy has primarily a curative functioning, whereas group therapy can work as not only curative but also preventive.A lot of individuals have now come to accept the magic of group work and synergy-which is the additive energy that helps a group of individuals help each other grow. And a good psychotherapist taps that very energy.”

Supriya continues to bask in the warmth of the immeasurable bravery of her husband who when alive lived a life that was hard beyond description and a death that was one step holier than the lives of the holiest of men.
